Here's a selection from Day One of "Round Pen First Steps" by Certified Lyons Trainer Keith Hosman:
"If you turn your horse lose and he stands there, perhaps an inch from your elbow, not moving away – then the same holds true. Quite often folks are afraid to run their horses off, figuring they'll instill fear or break a bond of some sort. To the contrary, follow what I've outlined here (pet often, get specific movements, etc.) and you'll find that relationship grow. If you’ve decided that round penning is necessary for your horse, then it doesn't matter whether he's running around like a loose nut or standing there, hanging out. You must understand – and this is especially true of owners of horses that 'just stand there'– that making a change in your horse is going to take hard work. It doesn't 'just happen.' Rather, it's 'no pain, no gain.' There are specific goals to accomplish. The "sweet horse who just likes to hang out with me" needs to be worked every bit as hard to make these changes (maybe harder). Feeling guilty about pushing him through the changes we need to see is a common trap, as the horse learns to manipulate you rather quickly. Regardless of the type of horse you have, you must work your way through the exercises, checking them off as you go, being honest as to whether a step was accomplished or not."
